Ikea part I – McFurniture?

I’ve had something of a fascination with Ikea’s furniture ever since my teenage years when my friend Konrad moved to his new place in St Kilda and showed me the bedroom desk he’d got. It was a huge pine modular setup, full of useful drawers and shelves for his various gadgets and papers. Somewhere I  ... [More]

Own your own wind turbine

I’ve been wondering about this for a while: if the government won’t fund wind power, is it possible to invest in it privately? I may not be able to buy my own personal windfarm, but could I buy a share in one? Yes I can. Thanks to a story on AM this morning, I found  ... [More]

Cap and trade

Here’s how I’d work carbon trading if I were appointed Grand Emperor of the World, based on my ten minute assessment of the situation. I’d set an emissions cap on the world, starting in say 2010, based on the total emissions output of the world as of 2009. Each country gets a share of this,  ... [More]

Lessons from 1983

25 years ago last week, the battle to stop the Franklin river dam was won. I think it provides some lessons for today. At the time it was seen as a battle between the economy and the environment. Most now concede that by stopping the dam, we have both — the stunning scenery of the  ... [More]

Attn: Tracey(s)

Attention: Tracey and Joanna Hoyle, and Tracey Anne Tobias. None of you live at my house. (I checked; these aren’t aliases the kids are using.) So please stop giving my address to people. The mail for you has gone back to the sender. (Unlike last time, I did check the White Pages to see if  ... [More]

Bellybutton fluff

How does bellybutton fluff work? Where on earth does it come from? There seems to be never-ending bits of it coming from my bellybutton. Every time I check there’s another bit. Can it be harnessed somehow? I wonder if it generates emissions when burnt. If not, it could almost be a limitless source of power.

Lost

On Thursday some school books were lost by Son The Elder. On Friday he checked with his home group teacher. He checked with the year level co-ordinator and the office. Following the long weekend, he checked again on Tuesday after school. Nothing had turned up. He seemed worried about the missing books, so I moved  ... [More]

World Environment Day

An email went around noting that today is World Environment Day, and it provided a list of tips for reducing your impact on the planet. It made for some interesting reading. Turn down the heat – reducing the thermostat by 1 degree can save 5 – 10% of energy When I use the heat, I  ... [More]

Insurance and driveways

Is the fact that your car is not in your driveway an advertisement to potential burglars that you’re not home? A lot of people drive every day. So if the car isn’t there, it may be a good sign that nobody’s there. One exception might be in a one-car family where there are often people  ... [More]

Cutting coal power

It really is as easy as Tony H said to switch to 100% Green Power. A quick phone call to Origin, which took under five minutes (I was already a customer). As of now my house is no longer responsible for emissions from brown coal. Which is good, ‘cos I’m afraid I’m a little cynical  ... [More]

How many men?

The 2006 Census tells us that in Australia, there are 6,863,624 men above the age of 15. Of these some 616,033 are in defacto relationships, including same-sex relationships. 3,547,331 are married. 2,700,260 are neither. The Census doesn’t tell us how many men wash the dishes. But let’s assume for a moment that 30% of those  ... [More]

Hour without power

After a little cynicism, I did in fact join in Earth Hour. Over at Marita’s, we shut off all the lights for an hour and survived by the light of the TV, candles and a torch. In fact there seemed to be few lights on in the street, and it was hard to tell how  ... [More]

More solar

Now the solar hot water is installed and happy, I was pondering further solar installations. The question is: is it more effective to get my own solar panels, and get green power for whatever I can’t generate myself, or just switch entirely to green power? First thing to do is reduce my consumption. My previous  ... [More]

Sitting in the dark

I’m not convinced that I’ll participate in Earth Hour. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a terrific idea for raising awareness of climate change and energy issues. But I’m already well aware of those issues, thanks, and I’m working on reducing my emissions every day, not just one hour per year. And besides, I’m  ... [More]
