Meeting the cardboard PM
The CBD shopping centre that started as “Australia On Collins” was renovated to become “St Collins Lane”. That started off promisingly, but obviously wasn’t getting enough patons, so they desperately tried turning it into a maze by running the escalators in stupid directions, which backfired completely, driving people away. Then it closed again – it’s recently reopened as “260 Collins“.
At my local station at Bentleigh, level crossing removal works were proceeding apace. By closing one track they made space to start digging out the trench.
This notice warned of the closure to continue the works; almost three months.
By this point, McKinnon station had already been removed, before rebuilding commenced.
Further north, this pic shows the Grange Road level crossing on the Cranbourne/Dandenong line before the removal works started there.
The trucking industry promoting itself. Yeah but would it be better if more freight was on rail?
Speaking of road vs rail, good to see this van driver getting spoken to by police after illegally driving into the Mall.
Experimentation with tram stop real time info. These were not very readable, but it was a good start. These days almost everyone can get TramTracker on a phone, and there are a lot more fully-fledged displays at stops.
When tram delays and disruptions occur, trams may terminate short and reverse direction. This was happening here, but the horse and carriage drivers didn’t bother to wait, and instead blocked the tram and the intersection. Rule 128 again.
