Old pics from March 2016 (ish)

I’ve fallen behind in my series of ten year old photos, so I’ll try to catch up. Here’s some from March 2016, as well as a few from a couple of months earlier that I missed.

A V/Line loco-hauled train departing Southern Cross towards Gippsland. These days these are all served by VLocity diesel railcars.

Summer 2015-16 and I noticed they had installed water sprays on the viaduct between Flinders Street and Southern Cross.

2016 was the year that level crossing removals really got moving, including in my neck of the woods: Bentleigh.

In this one (10th March 2016) two out of three tracks were still in service.

Later in March the crossing closed for a while, to build the road bridge that would eventually go over the sunken tracks.

A couple of snaps of the old Murrumbeena station. It would be rebuilt as part of the Dandenong line skyrail project.

Outside the world of public transport, this article in Australian Personal Computer predicting that 3D would take over turned out to be way off the mark.

I used to love going hunting for novelty calendars, especially in the post-Christmas sales. These pop-up shops no longer appear except in the big malls.

Derailments on the tight curves around Rushall station on the Mernda line are nothing new. (See also: 2025 incident)

And one final one, also from TV news, Malcolm Turnbull, a few months after he’d become PM.

Last pic in the montage: The W class tram sculpture on the corner of Flinders/Spencer St was coincidentally removed at the end of March.

Actually it was removed in the end of May, not March. Still close enough to coincide with the delayed blog post!
