The tram to Telstra Dome

That tram must be really old… it still says “Telstra Dome.” (Pic taken on Friday.) I wonder how much it costs to get the old pre-digital/dot-matrix destination rolls re-done. Or indeed if there are many people who remember how to do it.

Why are hawkers and chugger surprised that I don’t want them to waste my time?

Julia and the Freddo

In my circle of friends, the story goes (and I’m sure she’ll correct any details I get wrong) that while ago Kathy was in the local supermarket with one of the kids, who was promised a Freddo Frog, but Kathy didn’t have the correct small change handy. Sorry kid, no Freddo this time. Uh oh,  ... [More]

Rating comments

A day off today. Rather clear out junk from the house, I’ve tried installing a comments rating system. If you like a comment, you can click the green Thumbs Up; if you dislike it, you can click the red Thumbs Down. Looks like it won’t let you vote on a comment posted from the same  ... [More]

Culture Memes rule, pass it on

How Aussie are you?

From the Suz’s Space blog, this is the How Aussie Are You Meme. I’ll leave the “No”s blank. I like that it’s got a nice mix of bush and urban stuff, and some culture in there too. 1. Heard a kookaburra in person. — yep. 2. Slept under the stars. — lain awake yes, slept  ... [More]

Outer suburbs missing out on PT options

The government may be embarassed by crowded trains and Myki, but what they should be embarassed about is the sheer number of people who never use public transport because it simply isn’t a viable option for them for any of the trips they make. So many areas in Melbourne have no PT other than local  ... [More]

Hold that thought

Working on the server. If you have a comment, hold that thought. Update 3:40pm. OK, that was easy. WordPress upgraded, and switched to a different server. Re-delegating now… if you can see this message, it’s worked.

Reference works part 2

In 2007, a week or so after Kevin Rudd became PM, I took a look at a bunch of online reference works, some free, some corporate, to see how many had updated their articles on Australia. The score was 2/5 getting it right, with Wikipedia and Britannica having been updated, and Citizendium, Encyclopedia.com and CIA  ... [More]

This is not me

Just so you know, this is not me. I am not blonde, and I don’t work at Thredbo doing their snow reports. (Found by my bro-in-law Adrian, who, by the way, you should check out if you ever need an architect.)

Living near busy roads

As reported in The Age, the US Health Effects Institute recently published a report on the effects of living near busy roads. Its conclusion was that: …there is sufficient evidence that exposures to traffic-related air pollution cause asthma exacerbation in children and suggestive evidence that they might cause other health effects. …the zones most impacted  ... [More]

Lego PT stereotypes

I’m probably reading too much into this, but here’s a PT stereotype: Lego’s Duplo bus. It appears that in the view of whoever designed this set, only old people and kids ride the bus. Okay, okay, we all know that in some cases this is probably very realistic. Many services simply aren’t good enough to  ... [More]

Coupons

I’ve mentioned it before, but Joel Spolsky wrote a great article a few years ago about pricing, and noted that companies would ideally like everybody to pay as much as they are willing to for their products. In economist jargon, capitalists want to capture the consumer surplus. Let’s do this. Instead of charging $220, let’s  ... [More]

Bentleigh station looking grey

Metro must have been buying a lot of grey paint. All of the graffiti on the retaining wall opposite platform one at Bentleigh has been painted over, as have the sides of the platforms. There’s been a similar frenzy of painting grey on the walls in the cuttings around South Yarra. I wonder if people  ... [More]
