Do you want to do this thing, they asked? For a weekly feature in the local paper.
“Sure!” I said… all I had to do was nominated places (mostly restaurants) in my neighbourhood that I like. Easy, and it might help push the cause.
I got my photo taken in one of the local parks. You can’t tell from the picture, but I was crouching uncomfortably to get the flowers into shot, and it was starting to rain. But the photographer was a cheery bloke who made it work.
This seems to be part of the Fairfax local paper strategy of filling its pages entirely with lifestyle pieces rather than news. It ended up basically being a plug for all my favourite local businesses.
I think I may have given a bigger plug to the Frankston line’s 10 minute services than PTV or Metro have managed since they were introduced.

What a hoot. Well done on a good feature article. You are a true ambassador for Bentleigh.
I presume your kids are mortified with embarrassment?
BTW, the Weekly Review (all suburbs) was never a “news” paper from its first edition, in contrast to the Leader newspapers.
There was some advertising for the weekend 10 minute services. Less so for the weekday services (although I may just have missed it).
Nothing against you, Daniel, but the other problem I have with this (apart from it not being news) is that it elevates inexpert opinions to a place of importance,
In this scientific age where we are told to go with the evidence, why is it that the media makes a big deal about the views of movies stars on politics, global warming, etc.? You have a (deserved) reputation for knowing what you are talking about when it comes to public transport, but why is your opinion on coffee, haircuts, take-away food, etc. of any relevance? Why do newspapers waste space on the opinions of non-experts?
No arguments from me there John!
“Why do newspapers waste space on the opinions of non-experts?”
A better question to ask, is why are so many people considered to be “experts” ? And by who ?
Why is any half-wit from Brazil a coffee “expert”. Or barber ? Or Hungry Jacks employee ?
