It’s local council election time again. Candidates have been prominent around the streets of Bentleigh, and at least one billboard has popped-up, nicely located so you can see it as you come down this street:
I haven’t decided who to vote for yet. Oscar Lobo, pictured above, is running again, and was one of those who responded to my queries on public transport the last time around, along with Jamie Hyams, who I ran into in Centre Road on Saturday morning.
Also spotted recently around the streets have been Brett Mason Hedger (Greens) and Rose Read (Greens — she introduced herself to me on the train one morning, and we had a good chat).
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out as the campaign hots up in the next few weeks.
Update: The complete list of candidates (for every council area) has been posted on the VEC web site. In Tucker Ward, there are 14 candidates for 3 seats.

Good on ya for getting to know your candidates. I’ve got no idea who’s running in Bayside or even if we are required to vote.
I just got around to checking who actually won our election here two weeks ago. I had expected Australia’s number 2 official bicycle hater to be elected, but he wasn’t, not even close.
They’ll just do the same as the last elections where 3/4 of the candidates have given preferences to the same person. Was pretty much a waste for me as I don’t pay rates.
Hi Daniel
Great to see someone taking an interest and with an open mind. I would ask you to hear from an independent voice and consider me for your vote.
Apart from the lack of credible progressive Councillors currently at Glen Eira, isn’t it fair that we should be giving new platforms to fresh candidates?
Check out my facebook page or email me at newtongatoff@me.com and let me know what you think. I am tired of Glen Eira’s excuses when it comes to giving cycling and transport a greater focus – time for change!
Have a great day

@Newton, thanks. I note you’re the only one I’ve seen campaigning via a van/mobile billboard cruising the streets. Not sure how I feel about that.
Do you mean Brett Hedger?
@cam, I’ve seen Brett greeting passers-by in Centre Road;
please don’t tell me that (as a Green) he has a mobile billboard!Ah I got his name wrong. Whoops.Hi Daniel, being an Independent has meant I need to get my message across in as
many ways I can including my own car. I’ve also stood on centre road and knocked on doors and leafleted and blogged too. Amongst other issues I am advocating for safer bike lanes and grade separation because I also believe the community will eventually realize the value of healthier transport options. However as of today people are rushing to get on with life and so I am looking to respond to their needs in a way theyll understand, whilst supporting the views of the more environmentally concerned citizens such as yourself.
Hi Daniel,
I think you meant Rose Read and Brett HEDGER are campaigning for the Greens in your comment above. I also have a facebook page with 3-400 posts about the state of Tucker Ward and Glen Eira….and how to figure out which candidate is which. Just search under Brett Hedger Greens Candidate for Tucker Ward and you’ll find it pretty easy. Jamie Hyams (Liberal Party) and Oscar Lobo (Labor Party) may have responded to your public transport queries last time around but they didn’t do anything – the last thing we need is another 4 years of these 2 guys putting cars first and the community, pedestrians, bikes, and public transport last. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.
Cheerio from
Brett Hedger
Greens Candidate for Tucker Ward.
@Brett, sorry for getting your name wrong! I did speak to Jamie last time suggesting Glen Eira join the MTF — and it did happen.
For others’ reference:
Brett’s Facebook page is here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brett-Hedger-Greens-Candidate-for-Tucker-Ward/295165453910845?fref=ts — and does have some interesting posts, including Brett’s profiles of other candidates and his views on their probable party affiliations.
