As a kid I had two copies of the Guinness Book of Records… initially an old one from an op shop, then eventually a new one I found on sale somewhere. They’re long since gone, but looking through the archive of book covers, I can still identify them: the 1977 and 1987 editions.
Julian O’Shea’s Comedy Festival show this year is called “One For The Record Books” revolves around the Book, its history and his aim to get listed in it.
The format is similar to last year – he’s up on stage (in the same room in the same venue, at the Doubletree in Flinders Street) for an hour with slides and a few props, talking through a story taking him from childhood to the present day, and many points in between.
If you’ve seen Julian’s videos (on Tiktok, Instagram or YouTube) the style is somewhat similar and familiar. But it’s not a bunch of short anecdotes told one after another – there’s a story here, carefully woven together.
Julian’s got a self-deprecating style of humour, with plenty of geeky and quirky facts along the way. It ends up being very, very funny.
Just as with his show last year M is for Melbourne (which he’s re-running if you missed it), One For The Record Books is very much recommended.
Thanks to Julian for inviting me along… and I realised we attended on the same night (3rd April) as last year’s show. Is that some kind of record?
One For The Record Books runs until 20th April.
One reply on “My goodness, my Guinness (Book of Records)”
I think we hold the record for most attendances at a Julian O’Shea comedy festival show on the same date of consecutive years.
